In the works

on:Was back in the studio again today my arms were up to it today. They had been pretty weak feeling since a recent checkup left me with bruises from them trying to draw blood. I still have some faint bruises but my arms don’t feel like limp noodles anymore. Which was good because I had a sizable amount of clay to work with and I was going for something big!
I threw two vessels today a small slender one and a large round one. Both were made using the clay that I began reconstituting weeks ago. I probably have enough in my bucket to start the process all over again. It was a little wet but still manageable on the wheel. I am going to make a plaster slab a little bit later tonight with some help that will help dry things out a little faster than just setting them on canvas. I could always grab a spare hair dryer but I have always found that way of speeding up the process to lead to some issues, like being too dry in one spot and leading to cracking.
Below I have pictures of the vessels I threw today and a pic of the clay spinning before I made anything of it. It’s a good before and after transformation.
Meh Day

on:Tried to get in some more time in the studio today but the bad weather outside was harsh on my mood. I think I should have napped before hand. I did manage to clean up a bowl and add some texture and pattern with a Iron Slip which I think will pop once this is fired. Prefired colors are always pretty bland. I was trying to make some slab work things with different patterned sheets I have but the clay for the most part was too wet and wasn’t picking up the pattern well. The one I did get I draped over a brick to help keep a shape I wanted. Now its drying out a bit.
On a side note, my best friend who I have linked to here before is a great artist and I recently started setting him up a Society6 page where you can buy his work as high quality prints, t-shirts, phone cases, etc. Check Paul Lapusan out.
Holes, crisis adverted for now

on:I took some pictures of the put together project I was working on last. I like the way the form turned out and the holes look carved into it. We will have to see how the pumice gel works out.
However, after I took these pictures the piece took a tumble after someone put something large and heavy on my table and it tipped over. A large section was totally broken into several small pieces. I have repaired it though! But since it was drying out and so dry adding water and fresher clay to it makes it a bit more unstable. I will continue checking on the little puzzle and see if it holds out and get it fired soon so this doesn’t happen again.

Been fiddling around a bit with some different ways of doing things.
The first has been cutting into pottery all the way instead of sgrafitto with slip like I normally do. I have had a couple of failed attempts but think the new one is coming out okay. I have a picture below. I am still making like an amorphous blobby pattern with it but just hollowing out spaces in the form itself. I have also thrown a base to this piece since it is a bit short and I want to give it some height. The failed attempts mostly had to do with either the clay being too wet, or the cuts being too close together, or both!
I also am really liking pumice gel lately. I tried some out before on a set of clay earrings and really enjoyed the texture and the fact I can apply it to wet clay and fire it and it doesn’t burn out. I want to add it to some more pottery and have some stuff with that rough texture, I may add some to the base of the piece I mentioned above. However I have already been adding it to an encaustic piece I have been playing with. I have a picture of that below too. This piece will probably get some more of the light green added to it and I might add some clay beads to it hanging underneath, not sure yet still playing with it, I just know it’s not done yet.
Fire of glaze and new jewelry

I got some earring posts and some more jewelry made. One small batch is ready to go through the glaze fire now so soon maybe by the end of the month I will have a brand new product to show off, Clay Jewelry!! I also made a larger batch of stuff that is ready for the first round of firings. So far I have made a few rings, which hopefully will still fit one of my fingers after firing, some earrings to go on posts, and some pendants. I am still looking for some good premade cord necklaces for the pendants. I am fearful though that I may have made some of the loops too small on the first batch of pendants, hopefully they will still be okay for some sort of cord. I also made a new kind of plate to hold jewelry and whatnot all of which can be seen in the photos.
Now I am working on a couple other projects, not ready for sharing just yet. However, I also got some freshly glazed stuff out this past week and have already begun listing some of it on etsy. This includes the pitcher that belongs to this set and a small pink polka dotted blue bowl. I will have to redo the lid to the aqua jar as it had some problems with the slip cracking in the first firing and then the glossy coat of glaze did not help matters. Everything else should be up soon.
Here are some photos of the finished glazed stuff and the in progress jewelry.

As I have stated before I still use the studio at the college I attended even though I have graduated. I can run my own firings in the off seasons like winter break or summer vacation. However this week marks the end of this school semester so I am trying to get as much in those firings as possible and ready to go before Christmas. A lot of the work I had to do recently was glazing stuff that I have been making over the last couple months and just not glazing. I also have been making quite a few more teabowls. Most of the work is low fire which allows me to get a lot of colour in. I have been mixing colours and trying out some new patterns. I’d love to hear any thoughts on them. I have more glazing I have been getting done that does not have photos. Everything should be finished in this batch by the end of the weekend so be prepared for those photos and new listings on etsy. (Speaking of which there are new listings on etsy right now! www.deidreart.etsy.com)

Back in the Studio

on:After a bit of a break from being able to get into the studio when I wanted to, I have been heading back more regularly.
I have thrown another round of teabowls, these ones to looks more like a certain one that I swapped with someone who would like another. I think a couple of them just might work. It is hard for me to force the clay into something as I am usually more natural with it, but I think based on the pictures I have of the other one, and how I remember it that a couple of the ones I have recently thrown and trimmed will work out well. I have included pictures of the last batch of teabowls below.
I have also been sketching out some shapes for a new large slab/coil sculpture. I want to play with some ideas of openess, in the form of some open and closed off holes in the piece, a larger opening encircling a smaller one, etc. This will be a good project in the coming months when the studio is more empty and I can have the whole place to myself 🙂 I am selfish a bit when it comes to the studio 😉
There is also another carving project I have been working on that is turning out nicely, but I would like to get more carved away before photographing it. A few finished projects should be on etsy soon so keep checking!
Here is one of the playlists I listened to the other day in the studio

Mixing Glazes
Posted September 26, 2010
on:I have not done it in a while, but it has become apparent that I must mix some glazes. A clay mix I used that was laying around the studio begging for someone to use before drying up was called a B-Mix. I had thought it was low fire. However, I have now found out it is a cone 5 mid fire clay. I could still use my low fire glazes on it, but it has been a while since I mixed glazes. I really want to try out some new colours. So now I must go out and search for some that will work well at this temp. The clay body itself looks quite nice left white, and maybe some of will stay that way. I will have to run some test as well. When I have some colours chosen and tested I will be sure to post again with results!
These websites have some great recipes to try on variety of temps. And with names like, Floating Blue, or Seacrest Purple, I cannot wait to try some of them, even some of the other temps. I have plenty of work to test on.
